Kal Segrist
Buried in Hico Cemetery: Hico, Texas.
1952 New York Yankees; 1955 Baltimore Orioles.
Segrist played in 20 Major League games in his stints with the Yankees and Orioles. He made his MLB debut on July 16, 1952, pinch-hitting for pitcher Tom Morgan and flying out to left to end the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 10th inning Segrist led off the inning with a single. Phil Rizzuto sac bunted him to 2nd base, a wild pitch to Hank Bauer got Segrist to third and Bauer then singled Segrist in to win the game on a walk-off. Segrist went 0x21 over the rest of the season with the Yankees.
Part of a 17-player "largest trade in baseball history," Segrist was acquired from the Yankees by the Orioles in addition to Gus Triandos, Gene Woodling, Hal Smith, Harry Byrd, and others. The Yankees got Don Larsen, Billy Hunter, Bob Turley, and others. Segrist was injured in September 1955 and was replaced at 3B by future Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, who went 2x4 in his MLB debut.
Segrist would go on to coach at Texas Tech from 1965-1987, including serving as head coach of the Red Raiders from 1968-1983.
